Triangle Area Asanteman Kuo (TAAK) will observe an anniversary with a kick-off Gala for the yearlong commemoration of 400 years since first enslaved Africans arrived and African American History. The signature event is being organized in conjunction with other organizations including The John Chavis Historical Society (JCHS), NC Museum of History, NC African American Heritage Commission, African Diaspora Coalition NC, NCCU Archives and History Center, Ujima, etc. and will be held on July 27 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, RTP.

The evening will honor the ancestors by embracing the past, celebrating resiliency and contributions, reconnecting with Africa (Sankofa) and advancing into the future. The tribute is globally aligned with Ghana’s 2019 Year of Return proclamation and the US Congress Proclamation for Year of Commemoration of African American History.

The Jubilee will begin at 6 p.m. with an exhibition and display of memorabilia, cultural vendors and cocktail with the rest of the program starting at 7 p.m. The historic commemoration event will also feature culinary offerings (American and African), religious and cultural performances, an interactive panel discussion, music, and dancing. The night’s featured panelists include notable historians, clergy, curator, legislator, etc. The exciting program will be complemented by raffle prizes.

“The event will help increase awareness, knowledge, the appreciation of heritage and would also encourage North Carolinians to travel and explore Ghana-US history, heritage locations in Africa and North Carolina,” said Dr. Helen Othow, President The John Chavis Historical Society.
