Frequently asked questions about NC State’s Passport Services office are detailed below. For specific questions relating to the passport application, please see the Department of State’s website.
Yes, we use a “live” on-line calendar system for appointments. When an appointment is scheduled, it will no longer appear as an option for you to select. Our appointments are usually full at least six weeks out.
Due to the volume of phone calls received, we may not be able to respond to voice mails pertaining to questions about appointment times.
The Department of State will not accept photocopies or notarized copies of citizenship evidence.
- A certified copy is any document that has the seal or stamp of the official issuing authority (acceptable).
- A notarized copy is any document that has the seal or stamp of a notary public (not acceptable).
Primary Evidence of Citizenship:
Born in the United States?
- Fully-valid, undamaged U.S. passport (can be expired)
- U.S. birth certificate that meets the following requirements:
- Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
- Lists applicant’s full name, date of birth, and place of birth
- Lists parent(s)’ full names
- Has the signature of the city, county, or state registrar
- Has the date filed with registrar’s office (must be within one year of birth)
- Has the seal of issuing authority
Born outside the United States?
- Fully-valid, undamaged U.S. passport (can be expired)
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certificate of Citizenship

If you were born in Wake County, North Carolina, visit the Wake County Register of Deeds. Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates are $10.00 each.
Examples of Parental Awareness:
- A parent appearing in person at time of application
- A signed statement consenting to issuance of a passport from at least one parent (should be accompanied by a photocopy of that parent’s ID).
As an acceptance facility, our role is to accept and submit application materials to the Department of State, who have the final say in issuing passports.
You will receive a letter or email if the Department of State needs more information from you before processing your passport. The letters and emails all have specialized instructions for your case that you should follow. Here are a few common reasons they may have contacted you.
While we strive to complete the process with utmost accuracy and exceptional customer service, we cannot guarantee that every application will go through the first time. Passport applicants are advised to hold off on purchasing international flights until passports are received.
For theacceptance fee ($35) and photo fee ($15 + $1.09 sales tax), we accept debit and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover), checks (personal, certified, cashier’s, traveler’s), and money orders. We offer a student discount for photos ($10 + $0.72 sales tax) when combined with the acceptance fee if a valid NCSU student ID is presented at the time of appointment.
All other fees (passport book and/or card, expedited and overnight delivery fees) are mailed to the Department of State and must be paid with a check or money order.
Yes. You can expect to receive your passport back in 2-3 weeks for expedited service. See the Department of State’s website for fees.
If you need your passport in under 3 weeks, you must go in-person to a Regional Passport Agency. The closest locations to Raleigh are Atlanta or Washington DC. See the website for Regional Passport appointment details. Appointments can be booked on-line.
You can track your U.S. Passport Application Status online at passportstatus.state.gov. Enter the applicant’s Last Name (include suffixes and hyphens as appropriate), Date of Birth (MM/DD/YYYY), and the last four digits of the applicant’s social security number. You can also call the National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778.
As an acceptance facility, our role is to accept and submit application materials to the Department of State. We track each mailing to ensure that it has been delivered to the Department of State. We do not retain any personal information regarding the status of applications in our office.
Your proof of citizenship normally follows your passport book and/or card. Your passport will be sent priority mail, and your documents regular mail. Please allow up to 10 days to receive all of your supporting documents (sometimes in separate mailings).
