Passport Resources

NC State students, faculty, staff, and the larger NC State community have multiple passport processing options.

Tips and FAQs

Tips

  • Most processing entities require an appointment in advance. Check other agencies if slots fill.
  • U.S. passport holders should always check the Department of State website, as well as the website of their host country’s Embassy in the U.S., for updated information on requirements, applications, and necessary documentation.
  • Processing requires specific forms and documentation. Any discrepancy in your application materials can delay processing times.
  • Passport fees are payable by check or money order to the “U.S. Department of State.” Include the applicant’s full name and date of birth on the memo line of payment. (What’s a money order?)
  • Current routine processing takes 8-11 weeks and is subject to change based on applicant volume.
  • If you applied in person or renewed by mail, you can visit travel.state.gov to check your Passport Status.
  • International travelers should have a passport with at least six months of validity after the intended return date.
  • Sign your passport upon receipt for validity, and keep digital and paper copies for reference or in case of loss or theft.

How Can I Get My Passport Fast?

  • Expedited processing takes 5-7 weeks for an additional $60.
  • To speed up the mailing time, utilize 1-2 Business Day Express Mail after processing (This amount should be included in your check/money order to the US Department of State)
  • Remember, the “processing time” begins the day they *receive* your application, not the day you submit it.

What If I Need My Passport Faster?

  • All local passport offices across the country work through the US Department of State and have the same processing times.
  • If you have an emergency and/or are traveling in less than 7 weeks, visit the Department of State’s official webpage or call +1 877-487-2778.

What If I Am Just “Renewing” My Passport?

  • Renew your passport online or submit by USPS mail; no in-person processing is required. Only schedule an appointment if your previous passport expired more than five years ago and was issued more than 15 years ago, or if you are otherwise ineligible for renewal by mail.
