Geologist Liu Named College’s First Director of International Affairs
Paul Liu, a professor in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS), has been named as the College of Science’s first director of international affairs.
In his new role, Liu will lead several key initiatives to enhance the college’s global engagement. These include developing a centralized website to consolidate information on international activities across all of the college’s departments and units. He will also focus on establishing new international research and education partnerships specifically tailored to the college’s needs. Furthermore, Liu will be instrumental in promoting student study abroad programs and other significant international initiatives.
Liu has been an MEAS faculty member since 2003 and has consistently worked to advance international collaboration and global academic projects. He has fostered partnerships with academic institutions across the globe, including in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Pakistan and Egypt. He also serves as principal investigator for several federally funded international research projects in the geosciences and was recently named a Provost’s Faculty Fellow on the Global Leadership track.
Liu earned his doctorate in geological oceanography from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William & Mary in 2001. He earned a master’s in marine quaternary geology from the Institute of Oceanology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as bachelor’s degrees in hydrology and engineering geology and marine geology from Ocean University of China.
