Honoring a Distinguished Global Alumnus
NC State and the Office of Global Engagement were honored to present Dr. Woo-seung Kim, president of Hanyang University in Korea, with the inaugural 2019 Distinguished Global Alumnus Award during a reception in October.
Each year, NC State honors former international students who have used their education to distinguish themselves through outstanding achievements. Dr. Kim was selected for his many outstanding international achievements, which have created a lasting impact in Korea and around the world.
Leveraging his master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from NC State, Dr. Kim has partnered with a number of universities to pursue his scholarly research and has produced widely cited new knowledge to advance his field. Recognition through professional organizations such as full membership in the National Academy of Engineering of Korea speak to the high caliber of his work.
President Kim’s vision for Hanyang University will leave a lasting legacy, building on the university’s status as “The Engine of Korea” to increase global competitiveness, develop sustainable innovation projects, and actualize the “3S” vision of “Smart, Start-up, Social Innovation.” His commitment to active engagement with global partners will continue to benefit many institutions, including NC State.
As he has said, “a university that is disconnected from the world cannot be said to be a ‘great’ university.” With President Kim’s leadership, Hanyang University will continue on its prestigious path and will help provide solutions to the world’s problems.
With this award, NC State would like to congratulate Dr. Woo-seung Kim on his distinguished work and to wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
