NC State Shines in Latest Open Doors Report
NC State University’s strong commitment to global learning continues to shine in the latest Open Doors report.
The annual Open Doors report, commissioned by the U.S. Department of State and produced by the Institute of International Education, highlights student participation in international education and exchange programs across the country.
Global learning is essential for preparing students to address the challenges of an interconnected world.
As the report highlights, NC State continues to enhance study abroad opportunities for all academic majors and enroll talented international students from around the world. “Global learning is essential for preparing students to address the challenges of an interconnected world,” said Vice Provost for Global Engagement Amy Conger. “Our programs foster international understanding, multinational teamwork and collaboration, and equip our students with the perspectives and networks they need to thrive.”
U.S. Students Studying Abroad
The Open Doors report tracks U.S. students in credit-bearing study abroad programs. NC State ranked 2nd in the state and 43rd in the nation for study abroad participation, reflecting the university’s strong emphasis on global learning as a core part of the Wolfpack experience.
During the most recent reporting period (2023-2024 academic year), 1,569 NC State students studied abroad, with the majority of participants pursuing short-term, faculty-led programs. NC State’s European Center in Prague remained the top destination.
Students also engaged globally through non-credit opportunities such as research, service learning, internships and fieldwork, which are tracked through NC State’s International Travel Gateway.

International Students at NC State
During the 2024-25 academic school year, NC State enrolled 3,652 international students in degree and exchange programs, and supported an additional 1,908 recent graduates on optional practical training across the U.S. The university’s international student population represents 121 countries, enriches the campus community and contributes to NC State’s strengths in areas such as engineering, computer science, physical sciences and mathematics.
