Part-Time Intensive English Instruction Open to Campus Community
Part-time intensive English language instruction is now available to members of the NC State community and the surrounding area.
Those interested in improving their English language proficiency can now take advantage of the high-quality instructional offerings previously only available to full-time students. Courses are affordable and conveniently located on Hillsborough Street across from D.H. Hill Jr. Library.
“With the addition of part-time enrollment, employees at NC State can now join regular IEP classes right here on campus during the semester and just focus on the English skills that they are seeking to improve,” says Karin Sandler, director of the Intensive English Program (IEP). “This option could be especially valuable for visiting scholars, who may benefit from additional language assistance but do not have the time to take a full-time course of instruction. The spouses of visiting scholars or their dependents may also enjoy taking a class or two to strengthen their English skills.”
Individual IEP classes range from three to ten hours per week depending on the course(s) selected. Community members may now enroll in courses such as conversation and presentation skills, writing and grammar, listening and note-taking, and reading and vocabulary skills during the IEP’s 15-week fall and spring semesters or its 10-week summer semester.
Classes in the IEP are intensive and are best suited for learners seeking a structured and fast-paced classroom environment. Courses focus on academic and professional skills required to function at a high level in both university and professional settings. All students must demonstrate at least intermediate English proficiency to be eligible to enroll in IEP courses and take an online placement test to determine their placement into the appropriate level of instruction.
The Intensive English Program, a unit within the Office of Global Engagement, is a full-time non-credit program for non-native English-speaking international students. Students build a strong foundation in academic, cultural, and technological skills that prepare them for life inside and outside of the American classroom.
