Bailian Li Welcomes AIEA Presidential Fellow
Dr. Bailian Li, Senior Vice Provost for Global Engagement, recently hosted on campus Curt Rom, Associate Dean for International Education at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Li serves as a mentor for the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), the only association specifically for leaders in international higher education. Rom was selected for an AIEA 2017-18 Presidential Fellowship, a highly competitive mentoring initiative for senior international officers within the first three years of their position.
As a mentor for the organization, Dr. Li welcomed Rom to campus in early October to observe how NC State approaches international education programming and administration, including how the university addresses challenges and solves problems in a global society. Rom’s three-day visit to campus included international strategic workshops, an International Operations Council meeting, the Global Training Initiative’s Faculty Reception, and opportunities to connect with various leaders among the the Office of Global Engagement’s units.
“I am honored with the AIEA Presidential Fellowship and the opportunity to work with Dr. Li and the Office of Global Engagement,” Rom said.“My time and experience at NC State was informative and delightful. I am grateful to Dr. Li and the staff of Global Engagement for sharing their successes and experiences with me. I always enjoy visiting NC State as it is a beautiful and welcoming campus, both its people and its place.”
In addition to his mentorship of Curt Rom, Dr. Li also participates in the AIEA Senior Adviser Program. This professional development program connects recognized leaders in international education with newer AIEA members and provides them with an opportunity to engage about internationalization of higher education while also learning from each other. Dr. Li currently serves as an Adviser to international education officers at the University of Wyoming, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
“It’s great for NC State to be recognized as a top university for excellence in global engagement and to share our experience and achievement with other universities,” said Dr. Li. “This also provides a good opportunity for us to learn other best practices from other universities as well.”
