IEP Student Makes History Joining U.S. Air Force Reserve
Embarking on a unique journey from the Intensive English Program (IEP) to the U.S. Air Force Reserve, William Shen is making history as the first-ever IEP student to be sworn into the military. Originally from Taiwan, Shen enrolled in the IEP program to refine his English language skills while preparing to apply for a Master’s degree with the Poole School of Management.
Shen’s path to military service began when he came across the opportunity to be an intelligence analyst for the Air Force. Motivated by a deep interest in American culture and politics, he sought to contribute to the nation’s security. Inspired by the slogan on the U.S. Capitol building, “different voice, one nation”, Shen decided he wanted to join the military.
Choosing the Air Force Reserve, Chen underwent an eight-month application process, securing a spot with plans to serve for eight years. His goal is to become an intelligence analyst, leveraging his background in statistics and quantitative analysis.
The IEP program plays a pivotal role in Shen’s journey, providing exposure to strategies for success and practice of essential academic English language skills. “The IEP helps students who want to improve their English and reading strategies.” According to Shen, having an IEP certificate gave him an advantage in his Air Force Reserve selection.
Encouraging fellow students to explore diverse opportunities within the military, Shen highlights the numerous benefits and learning opportunities available, especially for those aspiring to become officers. As Shen attends boot camp, his story stands as an inspiration for students considering unique opportunities.
