Inclusive NC State Global: DEI Initiatives
NC State’s Study Abroad team has engaged in a range of professional development activities related to diversity. From Elon University’s Global Pedagogy Workshop to participation in the Global Inclusion 2023 Diversity Abroad Conference, the team focuses on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and justice in study abroad.
Last August, Study Abroad Director Julia Law and Assistant Director of Study Abroad Advising Mansir Petrie attended a Global Pedagogy Workshop at Elon University. This workshop, with the theme of “Cultivating Community, Wellbeing and Belonging to Maximize Study Away Learning,” was designed to prepare those leading students on study abroad programs.
The keynote speaker, Keshia Abraham, emphasized her intention to help faculty leaders “embrace the joy in their work while considering the contemplative practices that help keep them well.”
Beginning with a keynote from Abraham, the afternoon consisted of breakout sessions relating to DEI. “[The keynote] was really the highlight for me, it covered all the topics of the day.” says Petrie. “The main emphasis was applying positive conscious leadership in study abroad programming and connecting with students in a way that is respectful, keeping DEI and justice in mind.”
Additionally, International Programs Coordinator Tricia Sandridge attended the Global Inclusion 2023 11th Annual Diversity Abroad Conference in October. The focus of the conference is to “advance DEI in global education and cultural exchange” among higher education professionals, students, and stakeholders.
Sandridge participated in sessions that took deep dives into topics such as the impact of study abroad on host communities, preparing and supporting students from all backgrounds and identities, particularly during pre-departure orientations, and building up intercultural capacity among faculty and staff.
“My time at the conference also created a meaningful space to engage with peers in the field,” says Sandridge. “We took this time to share stories of challenges and successes our home institutions or organizations have faced while creating global exchange opportunities. I am excited to bring these lessons and strategies back and work with the team to develop sustainable and accessible programs for our students, faculty, and partners abroad.”
NC State Global’s dedication to DEI is evident through its DEI council and team commitment to diverse professional development. Excited about the future, the division remains committed to DEI and ensures a continual enhancement of global learning for all.
