Jackson Rigney International Service Award

Purpose

This award is to recognize the distinguished contributions of a faculty or staff member at North Carolina State University for the promotion of international understanding and service to the university and/or to the international community over the course of their career.

Dr. Jackson Rigney, an agronomist who served NC State for forty years, promoted agricultural development in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

About Jackson Rigney

Dr. Jackson A. Rigney was an agronomist of great energy and generosity of spirit who served NC State for forty years and brought a global perspective to his life and work which serves as a model for those who seek to promote international programs. Dr. Rigney was Chief of the NC State Research Mission to Peru, and received the Official Order of Merit from the president of Peru. He embraced an ethic of service, which extended well beyond professional and academic duties. The Jackson Rigney International Service Award fund was established to honor his memory and his work and to recognize and support others who carry on in the same tradition of international service that characterized Dr. Rigney’s own work.

Award

The Jackson Rigney International Service Award consists of a plaque and $1,000 grant to be presented at the Global Engagement Exposition.

Criteria

Active and full-time faculty and staff who have been employed by NC State for a minimum of five years at the time of nomination, and who have achieved distinction in international service through their life time work in terms of scholarly activity in teaching, research, and public service shall be eligible for nomination. Nominees should have evidence of going above and beyond normal job responsibilities to achieve excellence in international work. Teaching, research and public service activities shall be considered of equal significance, with exceptional performance in one or more areas being the bases of distinction.

Sponsorship

The Jackson Rigney International Service Award is sponsored by the University Standing Committee on International Programs (CIP). Funding for the Award is provided through the Jackson A. Rigney International Endowment in the North Carolina State University Foundation.

Selection Process

Each spring, the call for nominations is announced by the Chair of the Committee on International Programs. Committee members review all nomination packages and announce a recipient at the Global Engagement Exposition.

Nomination Instructions

Nominators submit their application materials to the individual designated by their Dean/unit head. Each college or administrative division may select one individual for nomination. Nomination packages must be submitted from the office of the dean or unit head. The members of the University Standing Committee on International Programs will review all nominees and make the final decision regarding award selections. The nomination package must include the following materials:

Nomination letter that outlines the nominee’s qualifications and achievements in international service at NC State or the world
Nominee’s curriculum vitae – should emphasize the impact that the nominee’s international activities have had on the NC State community or the world and be limited to two pages
